The finest golf courses, as everyone widely accepts, reside in the states of California, Arizona, Florida and North and South Carolina. There is a plethora of courses in those states that are especially women-friendly. But which ones are the best? We highlight five of the best golf courses in the country for women below, one from each of the aforementioned states.
1. Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club and Mid Pines Golf Resort, Southern Pines, NC
Self-billed as “The Once in a Lifetime Resort”, Pine Needles and Mid Pines Golf Resorts is just 60 miles southwest of Raleigh and 75 miles east of Charlotte, so it is easy to get to. Mid Pines is ranked No. 18 and Pine Needles No. 22 in Golfweek Magazine’s Top 100 Resort Courses in the USA. It is one of a small handful of resort complexes that have two golf courses ranked in the Top 25. The accommodations at The Lodge at Pine Needles and The Inn at Mid Pines are second-to- none featuring extensive golf practice facilities, grass tennis courts, heated pools, game rooms, fitness centers, restaurants and lounges in addition to the world-class courses.
2. Silverado Resort, Napa, Calif.
In the heart of Napa’s wine country, you’ll be golfing in the morning and then wine-tasting in the afternoon at Silverado Resort & Spa. Both the North and South Courses are solid, but not too challenging. When current owner Johnny Miller purchased the resort, he moved the ladies’ sets of tees up to be more accommodating.
3. The Boulders Resort & Spa, Carefree, Ariz.
Take a step back in time at The Boulders, a 36-hole retreat located 20 miles north of Phoenix. Amidst a setting of huge granite boulders in the heart of the Sonoran Desert, be sure to check out the South Course. Its Gold and Red tees both are rated for women and it is the more visually arresting of the two layouts. Its holes weave through a stunning rock-strewn and cactus-filled landscape. Still a beginner on the links? No worries. To ease the anxiety one might be feeling at such a majestic course, The Boulders offers female-friendly instructional programs. The Golden Door Spa features Native American-inspired treatments. You can also get down on some yoga, Pilates, and Tai Chi classes. Don’t forget the eats: The resort’s Southwestern-inspired cuisine is renowned.
4. Kiawah Island Golf Resort, Kiawah Island, SC
Located just a few miles from Charleston, S.C., Kiawah Island Golf Resort offers guests three awesome lodging options. The Sanctuary Hotel is basically a mansion on water. The Resort Villas are condo-style homes with plenty of room for partying. Premier and private homes are private oceanfront beach vacation homes with nothing but the best amenities. The dining options are no less spectacular. Guests can choose from 11 different restaurants and grills. But please don’t forget about the golf. Boasting five courses, the Kiawah Island Golf Resort is an impressive destination to hit the links, for sure. The courses were designed by the likes of Pete Dye, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Fazio, Gary Player and Clyde Johnston. The Ocean Course hosted the 2007 Senior PGA Championship, the 1991 Ryder Cup as well as other pro events.
5. LPGA International, Daytona Beach, FL
This is a facility built for the best female pros in the world, and it’s right in beautiful Daytona Beach. Naturally, this course is women-friendly. Both courses at the facility have two sets of forward tees for women. The pros love the Champions course, but don’t let that scare you. It’s a very playable set of holes. The Legends course is more “mind over muscle”, which is also an enjoyable challenge.
